About The University of Alaska Anchorage, located in Anchorage, Alaska, is a public, four year institution founded in 1954. The school is the largest of the three that comprise the University of Alaska System. Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in Walnut, California is one of the largest of California's two-year community colleges.  It is comprised of a single campus, located in the San Gabriel Valley, and serves communities east of Los Angeles. Mt. SAC offers over 200 degree and certificate programs.

History

Mt. SAC was founded in 1945 as "Eastern Los Angeles County Community College." It was later renamed for the snow-capped mountain that is visible in the distance from the campus (commonly known by locals as "Mt. Baldy").  Mt. SAC's 421-acre campus was once part of the La Puente Rancho.  There was an army hospital on the site during World War II, which later became a Navy hospital. In 1946, this facility opened as Mt. San Antonio College.

The area around Mt. SAC was not yet populated, and was accessed by dirt roads that ran through grasslands and fields of cactus.  The local area began to develop as Mt. SAC grew in size.  The city of Walnut, California sprung up around the Mt. SAC campus, and the college district now includes cities such as Baldwin Park, Covina, Diamond Bar, Hacienda Heights, Irwindale, La Puente, Pomona, West Covina, and more.

History

Salt Lake Community College was established in 1948.

The college's Grand Theatre, which mounts several productions each year that are open to students and the public, is part of the SLCC's South City Campus.  It began as part of South High School in Salt Lake City in 1931 until the school closed in 1988.  That same year, SLCC bought the property to use as its city campus, but decided to retain the auditorium as the college's new theatre instead of developing it into classrooms.

There are many activities to keep students busy at SLCC, including extramural athletics, involvement with the Globe Newspaper or Globe Radio, the LeaderShape program, numerous student activities and clubs, student government, and the student life and leadership program.  The Thayne Center for Service & Learning offers volunteer opportunities with nonprofit community organizations.

To help students select the area of study that is right for them, SLCC offers several workshops and resources.  Students may take the free "Career Clues Workshop" or "CHOICES," a free skills and interest assessment available via computers on campus.

The Career Library in the Student Center Building at the main Taylorsville Redwood Campus offers more resources to help students choose the right academic major and career. There are also academic and career advisors available to help guide students on the path that is right for them.

Salt Lake Community College has several Bruin teams that compete in intercollegiate athletics.  The Bruin sports teams include men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball and soccer.  The Bruin Cheer club is also very active.

Sacramento City College (SCC), part of the Los Rios Community College District, is a two-year community college in Sacramento, California.  In addition to its main campus, SCC holds classes at its Davis and West Sacramento centers. SCC offers hundreds of academic study programs that lead to an associate's degree, as well as study programs geared for students transferring to four-year colleges and universities to complete a bachelor's degree. SCC also offers vocational training programs that lead to occupational degrees and certificates.

SCC encourages local high school students to enroll in its Advanced Education Enrichment program, once they reach 11th and 12th grade. This program allows them to take up to two classes at SCC per semester, which earn them academic credits to apply toward a college degree or certificate.

Sacramento City College was founded in 1916 as a department of Sacramento High School. In 1922, the city of Sacramento established a junior college district that severed the college's connection with Sacramento High School. In 1936, Sacramento City College became part of the Sacramento City Unified School District. In 1964, SCC left the Sacramento City Unified School District to join the Los Rios Junior College District. Another college in this district was American River College. In 1970 the district was renamed to "Los Rios Junior College District." Cosumnes River College and Folsom Lake College soon joined the District.

History

Schenectady County Community College was established in 1967 in Schenectady, New York. Initially located on the Van Curler hotel in downtown Schenectady, the school began to expand in 1978, adding more buildings, an auditorium, library and student center and more since. Currently there are plans to provide a student dormitory. The school is constantly reviewing and updating its curriculums and program offerings to reflect the needs of the community and its residents.

SCCC provides educational programs for transfer, career and personal growth. The school provides quality education with a focus on working closely with students, following their progress and assisting them in their choices. The school offers associate and certificate programs in a large number of fields. Career and technical programs provide students with  the skills and experience necessary to perform duties and tasks in entry level positions related to their field of study professionally, and are capable of entering the workforce immediately after graduation. Academic programs prepare students for transfer to a four year institution by providing the freshman and sophomore years of a bachelor's degree at low cost. Sinclair Community College (SCC) is two-year community college in Dayton, Ohio, offering the lowest tuition rate in the state. History

David A. Sinclair founded Sinclair Community College in 1887 with a mission to "find the need and endeavor to meet it." When the school was founded, classes were offered through the YMCA.

Bookkeeping and mechanical drawing were taught to an all-male student body. By 1910, the curriculum was much broader and the "YMCA College" moved to a larger building. In 1929, the YMCA moved to an even larger building, to support its expanding curriculum that included the Dayton Law School and the Dayton Technical School.

The YMCA College was renamed "Sinclair College" in 1948 in honor of its founder, David A. Sinclair, the Secretary of Dayton YMCA from 1874 to 1902.  By 1959, Sinclair College was still housed in the YMCA buildings, but was independently operated as an institution of higher learning under the jurisdiction of the State of Ohio. In 1966, Ohio crated the Montgomery County Community College District and Sinclair College officially became a community college.

The school acquired 20 acres of land in Dayton Ohio in the late 1960s, and by 1972 the original seven buildings on the new Sinclair Community College campus were completed and ready for operation.

The school colors for Sinclair Community College are red, black and white, which are colors of their tartan plaid. About Atlantic Cape Community College, located in Mays Landing, New Jersey, was founded 1964 to serve residents of Atlantic County and Cape May County, having expanded its services to Cape May County in 1999 and adding the campus in 2005. The school serves over 6000 students a year through its two campuses, the second of which is located in Cape May Court House. The school was the second such community college to be founded in the state. The school is dedicated to providing residents with a quality education, providing programs, services and facilities that are modern and relevant to the community.
Academics Atlantic Cape Community College provides over forty career training and academic transfer programs. These programs are designed to meet the needs of the community and assist students in achieving their goals. Career training and vocational programs provide the skills and training necessary to perform as professionals in a given technical or vocational field. Students will develop the required abilities through classroom and practical courses that offer real world experience and understanding of the field. These programs take between one and two years to complete, resulting in either an associate degree or certificate. Students may pursue employment at the entry level after graduation.
Academic transfer programs allow students to complete the lower division and general education courses for a given major over the course of two years at low cost, followed by transfer to a four year institution to complete the final two years of a bachelor's degree. Agreements with public institutions in New Jersey making transfer easier for those who follow curriculum guidelines. Individuals who choose to apply at a private or out of state institution are advised to meet with a counselor to plan the curriculum that best fulfills the transfer requirements of the school or school's desired.

Admissions and Financial Aid Atlantic Cape Community College is a public two year open enrollment institution. Any student that fulfills the minimum requirements for admission may enroll through the completion and submission of the application for admission. Students are required to provide transcripts and test scores, and will be asked to take a placement exam to ensure they meet minimum general education requirements prior to registration. Students are asked to participate in orientation and meet with a counselor prior to the start of their first semester. Registration takes place prior to the start of each semester, with tuition fees due shortly after registration is completed.
Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants and scholarships. Students in need of financial assistance must complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the standard document used by postsecondary institutions to identify a student's financial situation and make judgments regarding need, program eligibility and awards. Tulsa Community College (TCC) is a multi-campus, two-year college located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mountain View College is a community college located in the large city of Dallas, Texas. Prospective students considering MVC will find the campus a cheaper alternative to many other institutions of higher learning, with a low annual tuition rate of under $2500 a year for in-state residents, and about $4000 for out of state students.

About
Minneapolis Community and Technical College, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was founded in 1996 through the merger of two former institutions and is overseen by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System. The two schools were a technical college dating to 1914 and a community college established in 1965. Today the school maintains a campus in downtown Minneapolis that has been renovated, updated and added to in order to expand the offerings of the school. MCTC is a public two year institution and serves approximately 15,000 students annually as well as maintaining a close relationship with businesses and organizations in the Twin Cities in order to assist in cultural and economic development.


Academics
As a comprehensive community college, Minneapolis Community and Technical College offers a large variety of programs aimed at career development or academic advancement and development. Career training programs provide interested students with an education in a specific field, providing the skills and abilities necessary to enter the workforce as a qualified professional. A students education will be divided between traditional classroom courses and practical courses designed to simulate real world environments and help perfect skills and methods specific to one's chosen field. Programs take between one and two years to complete and result in a certificate or degree that demonstrates competency in the area of study.

Academic transfer results through the completion of a program that covers the first two years of a four year education, followed by the applying to college and universities in order to continue one's education, completing the final two years and obtaining a bachelor's degree. The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) is a two-year college comprised of three primary campuses and two satellite campuses in Maryland.CCBC also offers distance learning programs, and more than 100 academic degree and certificate programs. CCBC offers excellent transfer programs for students planning to transition into four-year universities to complete their bachelor's degrees.

The Community College of Baltimore County was founded in 1957. The Catonsville branch originally operated out of the Catonsville High School basement. The college got its own campus in Catonsville in 1962. The Essex branch originally operated out of Kenwood High School. It got its own campus in the 1960s. In 1970, CCBC founded its Dundalk Campus.

The mission and purpose of the Student Life Program at CCBC is: "To provide a comprehensive program that provides cultural, social, recreational, health and wellness, and an intellectual environment for all."

Student clubs, organizations and activities cover a broad range of interests, including fine arts, performing arts, sports, pop culture, student government, horticulture, and philosophy, to name a few.

Student services at CCBC include tutoring, counseling, advising, testing, career training, and more.

Athletics

CCBC offers athletic programs at all three of its primary campuses: Catonsville (Cardinals), Dundalk (Lions) and Essex (Knights). Students should contact the athletics department at each campus to find out which sports programs are based there. CCBC men's and women's athletic teams compete in intercollegiate sports at the state, regional and national levels.

Community Life

CCBC offers many programs to the community. Programs that benefit local businesses include training for businesses, such as food safety, health care, workplace literacy, applied technology, and command Spanish, among others. Community education is available for life enrichment, adult literacy, children and young adults, career training, internships, and more. Performing arts productions are available to community members through the Catonsville Community Theatre Company, the Dundalk Community Theater, Senior Start Showcase, and the theatre, dance and music departments.

Airport & Air Traffic Control

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is to governing agency that oversees all air traffic. Much like state boundaries on the terra firms, the FAA has divided up the airspace in the United States into twenty-one different regions or centers. Each designated center is further divided into sectors and zones known as Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) airspaces.

The air traffic control system divisions that are managed by the FAA include five main entities that include the following:

  • Flight Service Station - The FSS provides pilots with critical flight information such as weather changes, flight plans, and terrain as they fly to and from small airports. FSS team-members are responsible for helping to coordinate search and rescue missions and assisting pilots with urgent and emergencies.
  • TRACON - Terminal Radar Approach Control is the division assisting with all incoming and outgoing aircraft within its designated airspace.
  • Air Traffic Control Tower - An air traffic control tower or ATCT is located at every airport with scheduled flights and helps with traffic navigation, takeoffs, and landings of all aircraft.
  • Air Route Traffic Control Center - The FAA assigns one air route traffic control center per center to manage air traffic within all applicable sectors with the exception of local airport airspace and TRACON designated airspace.
  • Air Traffic Control System Command Center - The ATCS Command Center manages all air traffic and resolves center-based problems such as weather changes, conflicting priorities, runway issues, etc.

Types of Air Traffic Controllers

There are three different types of air traffic controllers in a typical airport setting. The roles are broken down by tower duties, traveling, and air space controllers. A brief overview of each type of air traffic controller is listed below to help you more effectively select college degree programs that fit you best.

Air Space: An arrival and departure air traffic controller will be charged with the responsibility of all aircraft within an airport's air space. They will dictate aircraft flow, separation, weather notices, and clearance for aircraft vehicles. An arrival and departure air traffic controller uses radar technology to manage flight information and generally work at an airport's TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control Center).

Tower Controllers: An air traffic controller that works in an airport tower on-site, is responsible for the flow of aircraft, vehicles, and people at a specific airport. As the name indicates, they work from control towers as they need to visually observe traffic flow in conjunction with specific communication devices and airport instrumentation. A tower controller will provide pilots and crew with flight plans, weather updates, provide clearance, and direct movement of vehicles for an specific airline carrier.

External Controllers: An external air traffic controller is a specialist that works to manage the aircraft traveling to and from airports not within a defined airport's air space. External air traffic controllers will typically work at route traffic control centers across the country which is a centralized hub versus being on-site at a specific airport.

Individuals wishing to become air traffic controllers must be American citizens and receive a degree in the field from a school that has been accredited by the Federal Aviation Administration. Individuals may receive an associate's or bachelor's degree, or may substitute some, most, or all of that education through previous education through the armed services. Once completed, individuals will need to pass an FAA exam in order to be eligible for employment.

Employment Information in Air Traffic Control

Air traffic control is not expected to see increases in job growth over the next decade due to extensive hires over the last decade. Most job opening are expected to result from the retiring of current air traffic controllers. Individuals in this field work at airports and airstrips, and can be found in both civilian and military locations. The field requires individuals to be knowledgeable about planes, their capabilities, and how to guide them from a distance.
